Jenna Ortega, the rising scream queen continues to establish herself as a major player in the horror genre, while promoting a variety of upcoming spooky projects.
After Ortega’s victory for most terrifying appearance at the Sunday’s MTV Movie and TV Awards, Netflix released a teaser trailer on Monday in anticipation of “Wednesday,” starring the 19-year-old performer as the eminent goth teen from the “Addams Family” franchise.
The series is directed by Horror veteran Tim Burton, the eight-part spinoff will follow the dark Wednesday Addams in a quest to unravel a mysterious mystery of her parents’ past.
“I feel very lucky to have been able to portray Wednesday Addams as a teenager and to watch her go off in boarding school and insert herself in a place full of outcasts, where she still remains an outcast,” Ortega said to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet on Sunday during the MTV Movie and TV Awards.
“Thing regarding Wednesday is that we’ve not seen her on screen for such a long amount of time. She’s always been a single-liner, this has been a lot of fun … making an emotional arc that is more complex for her, as well as giving her a little more variety than she’s previously.”
The actor of the future also acknowledged the admiration she has for Christina Ricci, who portrayed Wednesday in the 1991 film of the same name, cult film “The Addams Family” and is scheduled to be in the adaptation of Netflix as well.
“I got to work with her, and I learned a lot from her,” Ortega said. “In my own opinion, Wednesday’s not going to be the same again. … It’s my responsibility to take every step I can … for ensure I’m not taking anyone other than myself … however, I am extremely proud of her and she’ll always be Wednesday to me.”
Prior to the Sunday’s show, Ortega additionally teased her future role on “Scream 6.” The “Elena of Avalor” alum made her “Scream” debut earlier this year in the role of Tara Carpenter, the first victim of the franchise’s mysterious serial killer Ghostface for the new sequel.
“What I will say is: Ghostface gets a lot more intimidating” in “Scream 6,” Ortega said to Entertainment Tonight.
“I just read a small portion of the script and it keeps getting more disturbing. … It’s probably the most violent or violent form of Ghostface we’ve ever seen that will be a blast shooting.”
After her triumphant turn with “Scream 5,” Ortega was also on the Ti West slasher “X.”
“What I love about horror is that it’s pure entertainment,” Ortega stated to Entertainment Tonight.
“There’s lots of pressure that’s released on set and everyone’s there to provide everyone a great time. … The actors are trying to show your best self you is to be in order to give the audience the adrenaline rush they need. As someone who is a lover of the horror genre and was a huge fan for quite a lengthy time, it’s a part of it. There’s a deep love for it.”
Alongside the mandatory return of Ghostface The sixth “Scream” installment will see Hayden Panettiere and Courteney Cox reprise their roles as the final Girl Kirby Reed and newscaster Gale Weathers respectively.
“[Panettiere’s Kirby Reed] definitely has been one of my favorite characters in the ‘Scream’ franchise for a very long time,” Ortega told me. “So the fact that her character gets to come back and redeem herself is really exciting.”
“Wednesday” is scheduled for release in the coming year “Scream 6” is slated to release on March 31, 2023.
